Nancy is strongly considering launching another bodybuilding competition. We talk about what she might do differently this time, focusing on diet and training.

In this podcast (Quicktime ipod compatible, 33MB; Google streaming flash video), Nancy Arnold and I (Bud) look forward to a new bodybuilding competition Nancy is considering undertaking in late April or Early May, 2007. In so doing, we revisit a question I asked her right at the end of her 2006 competition: what did she do right and wrong and how would she change? When I originally asked her this question, she deferred. Now, she was ready to answer in detail.
If you followed our podcasts covering the final month of Nancy's last contest prep, you will know that diet played a central role. And, we start with diet here. Bodybuilders diet to reduce body fat and show their muscles to their fullest. Diet was a big challenge for Nancy in her last competition. This time, she is starting immediately with the metabolic diet, a low carb diet oriented specifically toward bodybuilders. Nancy had noticed that she was best able to lose weight on low carb diets. She's not trying to lose weight now, but the idea behind the metabolic diet is to turn your body into a fat burning machine so that you can more easily lose weight when you decide to. The variant Nancy is following also helps optimize muscle development during training.
However, bodybuilding is not just about diet. Those following this site know that we have been working on a new periodized training regimen. Nancy and I have decided to continue on this route. The two big contributions that periodization has made to our training are systematic measurement of 1RMs and built-in recovery planning.
Nancy has not yet officially committed to doing another show, but it looks very likely. In that event, we will do another series of podcasts regarding the particulars of diet, training, and measurement.
