Gold's Gym, Ann Arbor | Paul Wright | The Gym Business

Paul WrightIn this podcast (Quicktime ipod compatible 22MB; Streaming Google flash video), Bud Gibson continues his interview with Gold's Gym, Ann Arbor owner, Paul Wright. They begin by discussing why Paul chose to start a gym even though his business background is in logistics.  Paul was tired of the logistics business and wanted to be involved in something that he was passionate about.  He has worked out since he was 9 or 10 and loves being in the gym.   He is also a bodybuilder, something he feels is  a lifelong journey, and he wanted his business activities to fit with that.

Paul then explains how he chose the Gold's franchise over some others.  It basically came down to the Gold's philosophy matching his own.  As he mentions to Bud, it is not the Gold's of the 1960's.  They have updated their own criteria for what to include in a gym, and Paul finds their new criteria appealing.

In concluding this segment, Bud and Paul discuss how Paul chose to equip the gym with Hammer Strength and Lifefitness equipment.  He wanted his gym members to have a place that would appeal to them both during and after the workout.  Hammer Strength and Life Fitness provide a quality of equipment that people  enjoy, and both brands help give the gym an appealing look.  Finally, Paul remarks how adding the smoothie bar and lobby fireplace to the gym's design was also meant to create an atmosphere that would appeal to members even after they were through working out.
