Muscle Definition and Endurance

Nancy and Bud discuss their motivations for doing muscle definition training.

Periodization | Training

Bud Gibson and Nancy ArnoldIn this podcast (Quicktime ipod compatible, 43MB; Google streaming flash video), I (Nancy) and Bud Gibson discuss our new muscle definition training regimen.

Serious Strength Training explains the muscle definition phase as "specific high repetition training that stimulates the body to use fatty acids  as a fuel source".  I wanted to use this training method to prepare for the show to see if my results could be any different from the previous shows.  About eight months ago we agreed that this is the training method we would try come January.  After I decided not to do a show this spring we still agreed that we would do  muscle definition.

As we state in the podcast our current program consists of 4 different supersets, 3 sets of each superset for 30 reps and one minute rest in between each superset.  This will eventually progress to eight exercises in a row without rest and one minute rest only after the eighth exercise is completed!  Our goals for this phase are very similar.   We both want to lean up a bit by losing some bodyfat.  In the podcast we also discuss the various reasons why we both gained a little more weight than desired.

Bud also mentions in the podcast that he is enjoying the lighter weight loads.  The MD phase requires lighter weight loads due to the number of reps per set.  Bud feels that these lighter loads have already given his shoulder and other tweaks a chance to rest and recover.
